Humility teaches us that we are dependent on the Lord for all things, whether we realize it or not. However, if we humble ourselves, we give credit to the Lord. Why? If we are proud, we do not give credit to God for what we are or what we do. Why is humility desirable? James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Clearly the Lord wants us to humble ourselves. If we are anonymous, we are not giving to impress others. We are following Jesus’ advice on how we should treat the least of our brothers. We are doing it to be of service, to help someone in need. Why are we advised to give anonymously? If we give anonymously, then we know our motives are pure. I want credit for the big salad and the small salads too. I don’t think I have ever successfully followed that advice. I have often heard the wise advice that we should do something nice for someone and not tell anyone. We know we should give anonymously, but secretly don’t we long for the credit too? I know I do. We love this episode because, in truth, we all want credit for the big salads in life. George loses the girl because he had to get credit for his generosity. Elaine inadvertently tells Julie and Julie confronts George and breaks up with him. Subsequently, George tells Elaine he paid for her lunch. George is beside himself because he did not get credit for the Salad. At Jerry’s apartment, Julie hands Elaine the Salad and Elaine thanks Julie. While George pays for the Big Salad for lunch, Julie picks up the bag containing the salad. George and Julie have lunch at the coffee shop while Elaine goes back to Jerry’s apartment. However, Elaine asks George to bring her back a Big Salad. George invites them to lunch, but they decline.
